R.A. & Helen Clendenin

Robert and Helen Clendenin

Robert Allen Clendenin, second child of Samuel A. and Myrtle Clendenin was born on July 20, 1917, the same year as the Bolshevik Revolution. Throughout his life he denied that he started it.

“Bob”, “Blondie” married Helen V. (Griffin) Clendenin of Wilson, OK. Mother’s father had been the Marshall and Chief of Police of Wilson, OK for many, many years. Dad was the next-oldest of 6 siblings. Mom was the youngest of 6 siblings. This was quite a gap. Her Father Thomas A. Griffin was born when U.S. Grant was President and the year the golden spike of the Transcontinental Railroad was driven in Promontory, Utah.

They met when Mother was working at Kress’ in downtown Ardmore, OK. She often spoke of the first time she saw him “Dragging’ his rope” in the store to flirt with her. The Kress’s building just weeks ago caved in and came crashing down.

We were all born on Oklahoma but we got to Texas just as fast as we could. We moved to Rankin, TX in 1949-50 a lived in the LPG camp a couple of years. We then moved to Snyder, TX for two years and then to the Reef Fields LPG East Veelmore camp 28 miles north of Big Spring, TX, in 1952. We lived in the same house for 28 years. By then the company belonged to Texaco Inc. and in an attempt to make Dad take an early retirement they made them move to an isolated pump station in a rundown camp house on the rim of Wild Horse Canyon. Daddy waited them out, leaned his chair back and said it was the prettiest view in all of Howard County. In 1982 they retired and moved back to Ardmore where they enjoyed retirement for 10 years.
